In the PLA’s response to the government’s call for evidence on commercial rents and Covid-19, it drew on the findings of its latest members survey.
Members were asked what they thought should happen when the moratorium on the recovery of rent arrears expires at the end of June and which of the government’s options for the lifting of restrictions would be preferable.
Views were mixed and often reflected whether lawyers were largely representing landlords or tenants. But most of the respondents believed tenants should be given more time to pay Covid arrears where it was needed. Ringfencing of arrears was also supported, with a distinction made between those debts accrued during trading restrictions and those arising from 1 July 2021.
