PLA Oxford Conference – a first-timer’s guide for junior property litigators
If you’re attending the PLA Conference in Oxford for the first time, this short guide from Philip Copley ( Senior Associate at Hägen Wolf and Chair of the Junior PLA North) and Perry Swanson (Senior Associate at Burges Salmon LLP and Chair of the Junior PLA) is designed to help you get the most out of the experience.
Do take advantage of everything on offer. This includes the walking tour at 2:30pm on day 1, and the early-morning running club the following day.
Don’t feel you have to do everything. Pick what suits you and don’t overwhelm yourself.
Do forward plan your networking. Once the guestlist is circulated, think about a few people you might like to speak to – a barrister you’ve worked with, an impressive opponent or someone you’ve not seen since law school.
Don’t worry about speaking to everyone. Meaningful conversations matter more than volume. There are plenty of opportunities to connect, from the black-tie dinner and drinks to informal moments during the Conference. Breakfast turned out to be a particularly relaxed way to connect with peers, so don’t overlook it.
Do approach people. The Conference is a relaxed atmosphere. Attendees are friendly and will want to help you to integrate.
Don’t feel intimidated walking into the room for the first time. Many junior property litigators attend the Conference, and there will be a room full of friendly faces for you to lean on.
Do enjoy yourself. The Conference is a celebration of the PLA and its members, and a great chance to catch-up with colleagues and connections alike.
Don’t overdo it. You’ll want to feel fresh for a full day of learning – including an early start.
Do make the most of the learning. The programme is consistently excellent, with talks from leading practitioners and KCs across the profession.
Don’t be afraid to push yourself. Consider choosing a breakout session outside of your usual comfort zone – you never know when that topic might land on your desk. And if you miss something, the PLA runs training and events throughout the year, including the Autumn Training Day and other junior-focused events and networking opportunities.
Most of all, thoroughly enjoy your first experience of the PLA Conference and keep a lookout for the Junior PLA committee who look forward to meeting you in person and will be available to support you with any on-the-day questions which may come up during the Conference.
