❓ We asked: if you could pick one legal development from the last 30 years which has most impacted property law, what would it be and why?
Well, we now have the answer!
Our judges, Honorary PLA members, Suzanne Lloyd Holt and Kerry Glanville, said "We were especially delighted to be judging our long-established Alan Langleben Memorial Blog Competition in the PLA’s 30th Anniversary year. The quality and the high number of entries was hugely encouraging: a clear indication of the enthusiasm our members, especially our younger members, have for our legal and educational endeavours.
The range of topics covered by the various entries was impressive: it was clear that the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022 was perceived as impactful, that the Land Registration Act 2002 continues in importance and relevance and that, at the end of the day, the introduction of the Civil Procedure Rules has had, over recent years, the most important impact on all our professional lives."
📢 ... and our winner is Bella Preece (née Stuart-Bourne), Associate, Charles Russell Speechlys. Our judges said "Bella was the stand out winner for both of us. Her approach to the topic was clever, funny and well-argued." Bella receives £1,000 in prize money and £1,000 will be donated by the PLA to the Guildford Food Bank as Bella's chosen charity.
Runners up: Michael Duncan, Of Counsel, RPC and Tom Hopkins, Associate, Russell-Cooke. Our judges said "Michael and Tom both wrote with humour and clarity and, for us, were the best exponents of the important and impactful legislation they chose to cover, which were Land Registration Act 2002 and the Building Safety Act 2022.
The winning entry, as well as those of the two runners up, are published in Estates Gazette here: https://www.estatesgazette.co.uk/legal/ch-ch-changes/.
